Farming for the love of the land in the Gatineau Hills

Putting all of your grit and love into the earth, and the circle of community you become part of and dependent upon, are central to farm life. Hearts in the Earth / Coeurs dans la terre takes the viewer through the stories of farm families in the Gatineau Hills, those who have been farming in the region for generations and those new to either farming or the Hills, or both; families whose lives are both transformed by and constantly shaping the Gatineau Hills as a place and as a community.

We launched this project just before the pandemic swept the planet. The past year has been a time of learning for all of us and we are grateful to the farmers and their farm families for embarking on this documentary film project with us. As we continue through 2022, follow along with us here and on Instagram @steadiiheart. We are moving into post-production now so stay tuned for the launch in Spring 2023.

Imagine your hands in the earth, you’re scooping soil and breaking it apart with your fingers. You drop tiny seeds one-by-one to rest on top, sprinkling a little soil on top for good measure. Looking to the sky, you imagine the sun and rain feeding your tiny seeds.

Picture your mud-caked boots as you walk through the wet, rain-soaked field with your pup. You’re both thinking of the cows you’ll welcome out onto this space, once the grasses have grown a little higher.

Now walk through the field you’ve just prepared, through that stand of trees over there, down the hill to the river. This river traces its way through the hills and farms that make this region particularly unique in Quebec and in Canada.

Hearts in the earth / Coeurs dans la terre explores the resurgence of farming in this unique region of Quebec and the growth of regenerative approaches to farming. This film is about relationships – with the land and with each other – highlighting both the passion and the determination at the heart of these relationships.
